Overview
This commuter rail expansion project included 18 miles of ballasted single track, six railroad bridges, special trackwork, 15 grade-crossings, six Load Transfer Structures (LTS), five Concrete Boxes for Rail (CBR) which are unique cut-and-cover tunnels, one highway bridge, three passenger stations, excavation of over two million cy of material, 1.9 million cy of embankment, 37 drainage structures, 93,000 sf of retaining walls, and installation of facilities to support follow-up installation of signal and grade crossing systems. Twelve miles of the rail system was built in the highway median of I-25 requiring extensive traffic control, public safety and ingress/egress planning, and coordination with the New Mexico Highway Department. The new rail line tied into existing Burlington Northern and Santa Fe (BNSF) and Santa Fe Southern Railway rail lines for a total system expansion of 50 miles. The design and construction was fast-tracked and completed within 15 months of the notice of award.
